What is Crohn's Disease?
Chron’s disease is a chronic inflammation of the intestines. It primarily breaks in the lining of the small and the large intestines (ulcerates) from the opening of the anus to the anal region. In some cases it can also affect the entire digestive system. This disease is oftentimes called Granulomatos Entiritis. Once this disease begins, they tend to alter between periods of inactivity and activity. It is now third among the deadliest diseases worldwide today. Chron’s disease commonly begins during adolescent and in later life. It’s primarily symptoms include bloody stool, vomiting, abdominal pain and weight loss. In a later stage, symptoms such as skin rashes, bulging of the eyes, arthritis and rheumatism are manifested. Chron’s disease is rated as the top deadliest disease because the body’s immune system of the person suffering the disease attacks the gastrointestinal track causing an inflammation. Chron’s disease is has a genetic link. It is known that relatives of the affected person have the higher risk of having the disease also. It was also believe that environmental factor is evident due to a higher number of people who smoke suffers the disease, both men and women. The disease is named after the American Gastroenterologist Burrill Bernard Chron. He has made a series of investigation to a number of patients who is suffering from the terminal ileum, the last part of the small intestine which connects to the large intestine. There are three categories of Chron’s disease presentation; penetrating, stricturing, and inflammation stricturing. Penetrating. Penetrating disease creates an obstruction to the passageway between the feces and the anal canal region. Stricturing. Stricturing disease causes narrowing of the stool due to bowel obstruction or changes in the quality of the feces. Inflammation Stricturing. Inflammation stricturing causes inflammation to fecal passage without causing obstruction to the feces. Symptoms of Chron's Disease Most of the people who suffer Chron’s disease have the symptoms for years prior to diagnosis. The usual onset of the disease is between early adolescent and adulthood but can manifest at any age. Because of the irregular nature of gastrointestinal disease and the intensity of tissue involvement, the initial symptoms can be more fuzzy than ulcerative colitis. Common symptoms of Chron’s disease involve; systemic, gastrointestinal and extra intestinal. Systemic Symtoms. Systemic symptoms includes growth failure to children are common. This is the first diagnosis of chron’s disease manifested by children. Fever is also present, Older individual suffering from Chron’s disease will manifest weight loss. This is associated to decrease food intake. A person who suffers Chrons disease loses its appetite. Gastrointedtinal symptoms. Person suffering from Chron’s disease may suffer abdominal pain accompanied with diarrhea. It is the first symptom a person may ever experience. Stool may not have blood streak. The fecal texture maybe watery. Bloody stool is less manifested in Chron’s disease than in ulcerative colitis. Flatulence and adominal bloating is more manifested to person with chron’s disease. Chron’s disease may also cause inflammation of the bile duct. Extraintestinal symptoms. Aside fro gastrointestinal involvement, Chron’s disease will also affect other organ system. This involve inflammation of the eyes more specifically when exposed to sun, this condition when not treated will cause blindness. Chron’s disease may also affect the skin. This skin abnormal condition is called Erythema nodosum wich characterized by red lesion. This mainly due to blood clots which the patient with Chron’s desease is susceptible to.
