Suppository is a tiny, sticky substance that melts at a body temperature. There are many uses of suppositories but let us discuss specifically rectal suppository. Rectal suppository is a type of medication that is inserted directly to the anus to aid person who is suffering from constipation. It is both systematically and locally acting agent that relieves a constipated person. Rectal suppositories are commonly used as: laxative, treatment for hemorrhoid and general administration purposes. Laxatives are used to speed up the elimination of wastes inside the colon. In laxative purposes it uses glycerin. Glycerin is the most common rectal suppository. Glycerin is a moisturizer to skin and can also be a laxative to anal region. Suppository is used to treat hemorrhoid because it acts as a lubricant to the anal region thus feces are easily expelled. Hemorrhoid is a painful protruding of the rectal veins, which is oftentimes cause by excessive pressure like when excreting a hard stool. Suppositories is used as a remedy in expelling hard fecal matters out of the intestine.
 
How to insert rectal suppository.
 
The fang shape of a rectal suppository is a very good reason for the conventional shape. This shape has a strong influence when inserted to the rectum. The proper way of inserting rectal suppository should be the blunt end first contrary to our knowledge that we insert rectal suppository by its tip first. This is a mechanical importance as we support the annals muscular structure and figure of the anal canal. Aside from the laxative anal suppository, there is also what we called the non laxative rectal suppository. Non laxative suppository is used after fecal elimination. This is use often by medical practitioners in examining the rectum where there is a need for finger to be inserted inside the anus. For many reasons, medical predicament such as an impacted intestine needs the insertion of a rectal suppository. Medical practitioners often recommend glycerin suppository for simple insertion. Things you will need to insert a suppository; glycerin suppository, latex globe, soap and warm water.
 
  1. Wash hands thoroughly in hot water. Use soap.
  2. Put on a pair of gloves. Make sure that the gloves you will use are sanitized.
  3. Open the package of he suppository, but keep the suppository inside th package until you are ready to use it.
  4. Position yourself comfortably. Side lying is the best position in inserting a suppository.
  5. When ready, take the suppository out of the package and hold it in between your thumbs and middle finger. Be careful not to drop it.
  6. Be sure that the blunt shape is pointing toward the anus not the tip. Insert suppository directly to the anus.
  7. Insert it enough to avoid suppository from coming out.
  8. lay still and hold suppository inside the anus for 15 minutes
